Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall

FutureA-
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Patriots to a D. There is reaching, and then there is Jalen Travis at the Round 7 slot. The Patriots jumped the board by 51 and dared it to prove them wrong.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. Leaving safety unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Landing Bech that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and safety is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
In slot 4 they get a premier pass rusher. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick40
Rnd2
Luther Burden III
Luther Burden III at pick No. 40 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick44
Rnd2
Derrick Harmon
They let Derrick Harmon come to them and pounced at pick 44. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick93
Rnd3
Jack Bech
Taking Jack Bech in the 93rd overall pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick106
Rnd4
Hollin Pierce
A wild overpay on Hollin Pierce in the Round 4 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick184
Rnd6
Jay Higgins
They reached into another round for Jay Higgins, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick217
Rnd7
Phil Mafah
They took Phil Mafah at par in the 217th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick220
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
Isaac TeSlaa in No. 220 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick238
Rnd7
Jalen Travis
Value said wait; Jalen Travis in Round 7, Pick 22 says they were not listening. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
