Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the Bears. The war room fell hard for Fentrell Cypress II, and it showed at the 244th overall pick: 63 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas.
Getting Carter where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick Analysis
Pick9
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
In the 9th overall pick they get a disruptor off the edge. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick35
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
A straight-up fair deal on Tyler Booker at Round 2, Pick 3, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick41
Rnd2
Xavier Watts
They paid up for Xavier Watts at No. 41 when waiting would have done the job. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick73
Rnd3
Hollin Pierce
Hollin Pierce in pick 73 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick147
Rnd5
Barrett Carter
They robbed the room for Barrett Carter here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick203
Rnd6
Bryce Foster
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Bryce Foster. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick226
Rnd7
Jonah Coleman
Taking Jonah Coleman in pick 226 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick244
Rnd7
Fentrell Cypress II
They reached into another round for Fentrell Cypress II, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
