Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall B
ValueB NeedB TradesA- FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Chargers, and a B to prove it.

The Chargers spent real capital to be 91 picks early on Dayon Hayes, and the board is going to hold them to it. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.

That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up. The trade work was a quiet net positive.

The offense got the lion's share of the attention.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Tyler Warren
In pick No. 23 they get a mismatch in the passing game, and a steal at that.
Pick55 Rnd2 TreVeyon Henderson
No edge and no loss on TreVeyon Henderson in the 55th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick86 Rnd3 Jake Majors
Jake Majors at slot 86 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick87 Rnd3 Luke Kandra
Luke Kandra at pick 87 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick124 Rnd4 Darius Alexander
They took Darius Alexander at par in the 124th pick, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick159 Rnd5 Lathan Ransom
Lathan Ransom in the Round 5 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick177 Rnd5 Terrance Ferguson
Terrance Ferguson in the 177th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The roster fit checks out.
Pick183 Rnd6 Cobee Bryant
They paid sticker price for Cobee Bryant in the Round 6 slot, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick201 Rnd6 Ollie Gordon II
Taking Ollie Gordon II in Round 6, Pick 23 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick215 Rnd6 Dayon Hayes
This one needs a full-page explanation: Dayon Hayes in the 215th pick, miles early. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick220 Rnd7 Jamon Dumas-Johnson
Jamon Dumas-Johnson at slot 220 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick253 Rnd7 Jaylen Reed
Somehow Jaylen Reed was still sitting there in pick 253, and they pounced on premier safety value. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
