Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B
ValueB NeedB TradesB+ FutureB-
The Patriots did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B.

For all the names on the card, the loudest question went unanswered. The Patriots walked out of the weekend still thin at interior defensive lineman, a hole that has a way of deciding seasons.

They are betting Cephus proves the room right and everyone else wrong. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Dixon.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick14 Rnd1 JC Latham
In pick No. 14 they get a building block for the line. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick34 Rnd2 Brian Thomas Jr.
Nothing to complain about; Brian Thomas Jr. went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick39 Rnd2 Chop Robinson
Fair-plus on Chop Robinson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick47 Rnd2 J.J. McCarthy
A tidy little value on J.J. McCarthy in No. 47, a step better than break-even. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick62 Rnd2 Ja'Tavion Sanders
Ja'Tavion Sanders at Round 2, Pick 30 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick79 Rnd3 Christian Mahogany
They took Christian Mahogany at par in the 79th pick, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick139 Rnd5 Johnny Dixon
Johnny Dixon in pick 139 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick182 Rnd6 Jaylan Ford
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jaylan Ford in the 182nd overall pick. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick224 Rnd7 Joshua Cephus
Joshua Cephus at pick No. 224 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick232 Rnd7 Jeremy Flax
By-the-book stuff, Jeremy Flax at the Round 7 slot squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
