Draft Grade — Jets
Overall
B-

FutureB-
Nothing loud, just a tidy B- for the Jets. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Jets spent Round 5, Pick 37 on Fernando Carmona, a name most had 41 spots down the list. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
That is a quarterback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They will answer for taking linebacker early while interior defensive lineman went begging. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In Round 1, Pick 2 they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece. Need was not the driver here.
Pick16
Rnd1
Carnell Tate
In pick 16 they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick33
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Sonny Styles adds a linebacker and leaves interior defensive lineman untouched.
Pick44
Rnd2
Akheem Mesidor
Akheem Mesidor at slot 44 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick103
Rnd4
Trinidad Chambliss
They paid a round early for Trinidad Chambliss in the 103rd overall pick, more than the board wanted. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick175
Rnd5
Fernando Carmona
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Fernando Carmona. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick178
Rnd5
Eric McAlister
Eric McAlister at the 178th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. It fills a real need, too.
Pick192
Rnd6
Quinten Joyner
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Quinten Joyner. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick206
Rnd6
Isaac Smith
A reach for Isaac Smith in No. 206; a little patience would have been rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick218
Rnd7
Kevin Jennings
A slide stopped in slot 218, with Kevin Jennings worth more than the price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick235
Rnd7
Ethan O'Connor
Value with a capital V on Ethan O'Connor in Round 7, Pick 19, a genuine coup. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick242
Rnd7
Will Kacmarek
By-the-book stuff, Will Kacmarek at pick 242 squarely in line with his ranking. A minor need, but a need all the same.
