mtime DRAFTING FOR THE49ers

Draft Grade — 49ers

The 49ers cashed the board's mistake on Sanders: B-. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the 49ers were there to profit. Raheim Sanders, the No. 147 name on the board, should have been long gone before No. 254. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
Smith has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get a premier pass rusher. A real need, handled.
Pick43
Rnd2
Denzel Burke
Denzel Burke at the 43rd overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick75
Rnd3
Ajani Cornelius
Ajani Cornelius in pick No. 75 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick100
Rnd3
Kyren Lacy
Kyren Lacy at slot 100 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick112
Rnd4
Jihaad Campbell
Jihaad Campbell in the Round 4 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick137
Rnd4
Jaeden Roberts
Value said wait; Jaeden Roberts in the 137th pick says they were not listening. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick186
Rnd6
Cam Skattebo
They barely believed it either: Cam Skattebo still on the board at pick 186. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick226
Rnd7
Jonas Sanker
A safety of that caliber at No. 226 is the definition of value, full stop. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick230
Rnd7
Seth McLaughlin
Circle this one: Seth McLaughlin at the 230th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick249
Rnd7
Tim Smith
They talked themselves into Tim Smith at No. 249, and the board did not agree. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick254
Rnd7
Raheim Sanders
Raheim Sanders at slot 254 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
