Draft Grade — Bears

A franchise passer in Maye headlines a C weekend for the Bears.

The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Bears spent their marquee pick on Drake Maye, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.

They are betting Robinson proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.

Hit on Drake Maye and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Drake Maye
In slot 4 they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick9 Rnd1 Olumuyiwa Fashanu
In the 9th pick they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick26 Rnd1 Brian Thomas Jr.
In pick No. 26 they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick36 Rnd2 Tyler Nubin
Tyler Nubin in the Round 2 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick39 Rnd2 Chop Robinson
Chop Robinson at the 39th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick47 Rnd2 Jackson Powers-Johnson
Jackson Powers-Johnson at Round 2, Pick 15 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick71 Rnd3 Christian Haynes
They paid a round early for Christian Haynes in No. 71, more than the board wanted. It fills a real need, too.
Pick75 Rnd3 Malachi Corley
Malachi Corley at pick 75 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick110 Rnd4 Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe at the Round 4 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick127 Rnd4 Darius Robinson
Darius Robinson in the 127th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
