Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B-
ValueC+ NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Patriots, and a B- to prove it.

The Xavier Truss pick is the one that will follow the Patriots into the fall. They took him 61 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.

On value alone, Williams makes the weekend a net positive. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.

Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Will Campbell
In slot 4 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value.
Pick38 Rnd2 Emeka Egbuka
A slide stopped in pick 38, with Emeka Egbuka worth more than the price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick69 Rnd3 Mason Taylor
A reach for Mason Taylor in No. 69; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick81 Rnd3 Andrew Mukuba
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Andrew Mukuba. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick106 Rnd4 Oluwafemi Oladejo
This one needs a full-page explanation: Oluwafemi Oladejo in the 106th overall pick, miles early. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick119 Rnd4 RJ Harvey
They liked RJ Harvey enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 4 slot. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick144 Rnd5 Kyle Williams
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Kyle Williams at Round 5, Pick 6. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick171 Rnd5 Damien Martinez
Damien Martinez in pick 171 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick220 Rnd7 Isaac TeSlaa
They reached a country mile for Isaac TeSlaa at the Round 7 slot, and the board is aghast. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick238 Rnd7 Xavier Truss
They reached into another round for Xavier Truss, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It fills a real need, too.
