sarhan DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
C+
ValueC-
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
Flashes of a plan, unevenly executed. 49ers: C+. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the 49ers spent pick No. 75 on Jackson Slater, a name most had 68 spots down the list. It lands right in the middle: a C+, no more, no less.
The Jackson pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.
They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Armand Membou
Value said wait; Armand Membou in pick 11 says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick43
Rnd2
Xavier Watts
Xavier Watts in Round 2, Pick 11 is fair value, right on his grade. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick75
Rnd3
Jackson Slater
Jackson Slater at the 75th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick99
Rnd3
Tez Johnson
By-the-book stuff, Tez Johnson at slot 99 squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick112
Rnd4
Aeneas Peebles
A wild overpay on Aeneas Peebles in No. 112, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick138
Rnd4
Mello Dotson
They did well to land Mello Dotson in pick No. 138, just ahead of his grade. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick139
Rnd4
Logan Brown
No edge and no loss on Logan Brown in pick No. 139; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick148
Rnd5
Andres Borregales
A market-rate specialist, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Andres Borregales. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick189
Rnd6
Teddye Buchanan
This one needs a full-page explanation: Teddye Buchanan in pick 189, miles early. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick228
Rnd7
Ja'Quinden Jackson
Ja'Quinden Jackson in slot 228 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick232
Rnd7
Thor Griffith
A big swing on Thor Griffith at the 232nd pick, well ahead of any board in the building. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick255
Rnd7
Shaun Dolac
Shaun Dolac at Round 7, Pick 37 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
