The Packers let Johnson fall into their laps, and walked away with a B. Thirty-one other rooms let Tez Johnson slide, and the Packers were the ones holding the card at the Round 4 slot. Highway robbery. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The veteran additions, Myles Garrett chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not. Cornerback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick Analysis
Pick26
Rnd1
Shavon Revel Jr.
In Round 1, Pick 26 they get a press-man option on the boundary. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick39
Rnd2
Walter Nolen
A top-tier interior defensive lineman at a bargain, Walter Nolen in No. 39, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick90
Rnd3
Ozzy Trapilo
By-the-book stuff, Ozzy Trapilo at the Round 3 slot squarely in line with his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick123
Rnd4
Tez Johnson
Taking Tez Johnson in pick No. 123 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick126
Rnd4
Luke Kandra
They read the board right and Luke Kandra was the payoff at pick 126. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick160
Rnd5
Jabbar Muhammad
A slide stopped in the 160th overall pick, with Jabbar Muhammad worth more than the price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick200
Rnd6
DJ Giddens
They will replay DJ Giddens at the 200th pick for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick203
Rnd6
Karene Reid
Value with a capital V on Karene Reid in slot 203, a genuine coup. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick239
Rnd7
Ricky White III
Ricky White III in pick No. 239 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It fills a real need, too.
Pick251
Rnd7
Moliki Matavao
Moliki Matavao at the 251st pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
