Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall D
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureA+
The Patriots answered their biggest question with Mendoza. Grade: D.

The Patriots went off the board in a big way for Charles Jagusah, 59 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.

They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. Everything downstream of Fernando Mendoza depends on Fernando Mendoza, and the building knows it. They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it.

Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Bernard.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and running back is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick1 Rnd1 Fernando Mendoza
In No. 1 they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
Pick31 Rnd1 Kenyon Sadiq
In pick No. 31 they get a mismatch in the passing game, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick36 Rnd2 Malachi Fields
They talked themselves into Malachi Fields at the 36th overall pick, and the board did not agree. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick63 Rnd2 A.J. Haulcy
A slide stopped in Round 2, Pick 31, with A.J. Haulcy worth more than the price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick67 Rnd3 Gabe Jacas
They reached into another round for Gabe Jacas, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick95 Rnd3 Germie Bernard
Germie Bernard in the 95th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick102 Rnd4 Caden Curry
Caden Curry in the 102nd overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick117 Rnd4 J.C. Davis
J.C. Davis in pick 117 is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick131 Rnd4 Kyle Louis
They liked Kyle Louis enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 4, Pick 31. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick136 Rnd4 Charles Jagusah
They left a pile of value on the table to take Charles Jagusah this early at the 136th pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick169 Rnd5 Pat Coogan
Pat Coogan at the Round 5 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick188 Rnd6 Isaiah Jatta
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Isaiah Jatta well ahead of where he belonged. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick189 Rnd6 Robert Spears-Jennings
A wild overpay on Robert Spears-Jennings in No. 189, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick200 Rnd6 Josh Moten
They paid sticker price for Josh Moten in slot 200, and that is fine. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick207 Rnd6 Zxavian Harris
A straight-up fair deal on Zxavian Harris at pick No. 207, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick210 Rnd6 Eli Heidenreich
Eli Heidenreich in No. 210 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick247 Rnd7 Tony Grimes
Tony Grimes at pick 247 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
