Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall D
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureB
The Commanders finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a D.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Commanders did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. A D that will need time and luck to look better.

Whatever Drake Maye becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. The Frazier pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.

If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. The Mayes steal is the beam this whole class leans on.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick7 Rnd1 Drake Maye
In Round 1, Pick 7 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick36 Rnd2 Keon Coleman
They paid sticker price for Keon Coleman in No. 36, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick39 Rnd2 Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the 39th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick71 Rnd3 Chris Braswell
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 3 slot with a little surplus value in Chris Braswell. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick72 Rnd3 Braelon Allen
A straight-up fair deal on Braelon Allen at slot 72, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick103 Rnd4 Zach Frazier
They reached into another round for Zach Frazier, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick107 Rnd4 Cade Stover
Cade Stover at the 107th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick144 Rnd5 Tyler Guyton
A reasonable price with a little left over, Tyler Guyton in pick 144. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick185 Rnd6 BJ Mayes
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, BJ Mayes in pick No. 185, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
