Mensah should have been long gone. The Lions pounced, and earned a D-. The Lions put a flag in the ground for Michael Trigg, 32 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. The process wobbled, and the D- is where it lands.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. Landing Mensah that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
Mansoor Delane
In the 18th overall pick they get a potential shutdown corner. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick33
Rnd2
Arvell Reese
Steal is underselling it; Arvell Reese at the 33rd pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick50
Rnd2
Trevor Goosby
Trevor Goosby at Round 2, Pick 18 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick60
Rnd2
Zion Young
Zion Young at pick No. 60 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick73
Rnd3
Eric Singleton Jr.
A straight-up fair deal on Eric Singleton Jr. at pick No. 73, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick94
Rnd3
Keon Sabb
A tidy bit of business in slot 94, where Keon Sabb graded well above the range. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick101
Rnd4
Michael Trigg
Value said wait; Michael Trigg in pick 101 says they were not listening. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick158
Rnd5
CJ Daniels
A big swing on CJ Daniels at No. 158, well ahead of any board in the building. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick182
Rnd6
Lee Hunter
They talked themselves into Lee Hunter at the Round 6 slot, and the board did not agree. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick199
Rnd6
Darian Mensah
The board fumbled Darian Mensah all the way to the 199th overall pick, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick217
Rnd7
Jahiem White
Jahiem White at the 217th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
