The Lions kept it disciplined and banked a B. Nobody else had Alex Birchmeier anywhere near pick 223. The Lions did, by 52 spots, and that gap is the whole story. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
That safety hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Igbinosun at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Grover Stewart gives the group a proven body among the projects.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the safety spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick59
Rnd2
Colton Hood
They went early on Colton Hood in pick No. 59, and the value did not follow. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick118
Rnd4
Derrick Moore
Derrick Moore at No. 118 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick136
Rnd4
Parker Brailsford
By-the-book stuff, Parker Brailsford at Round 4, Pick 36 squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick158
Rnd5
Jacob Rodriguez
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jacob Rodriguez. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick187
Rnd6
Davison Igbinosun
Davison Igbinosun is a better player than slot 187 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick189
Rnd6
Aamil Wagner
Aamil Wagner slid further than he should have, and the 189th overall pick is lovely value for the offensive lineman. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick203
Rnd6
Cam Calhoun
They liked Cam Calhoun enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 6, Pick 23. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick215
Rnd6
Kalil Alexander
This one needs a full-page explanation: Kalil Alexander in the 215th overall pick, miles early. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick223
Rnd7
Alex Birchmeier
Alex Birchmeier at slot 223 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
