Grand theft in the 202nd pick: the Chargers steal McClain and grade out a C. The Chargers did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Jaylen McClain fell into pick No. 202.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The Chargers clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
Hit on Jeremiah Smith and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
Jeremiah Smith
In pick No. 22 they get a go-to option on the outside, outstanding value to boot.
Pick55
Rnd2
Colin Simmons
Taking Colin Simmons in Round 2, Pick 23 is close to grand larceny; an edge rusher that good had no business lasting this long. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick75
Rnd3
Samson Okunlola
Samson Okunlola is a better player than the 75th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick81
Rnd3
Rasheem Biles
Rasheem Biles at the Round 3 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The roster logic is harder to follow.
Pick86
Rnd3
Kade Pieper
Kade Pieper at No. 86 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick87
Rnd3
Jadan Baugh
The board fumbled Jadan Baugh all the way to the 87th overall pick, and they scooped it up. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick100
Rnd3
Jayden Maiava
Jayden Maiava in pick 100 is fair value, right on his grade. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick123
Rnd4
Devin McCuin
Devin McCuin in slot 123 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick128
Rnd4
Taylor Wein
They took Taylor Wein at par in pick 128, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick136
Rnd4
Walker Lyons
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Walker Lyons. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick140
Rnd5
Eli Bowen
Good price on Eli Bowen in pick No. 140, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The roster reasoning here is anyone's guess.
Pick148
Rnd5
Blake Frazier
Blake Frazier in the Round 5 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick202
Rnd6
Jaylen McClain
Circle this one: Jaylen McClain at slot 202 is a fall that decides a draft. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
Pick206
Rnd6
Elinneus Davis
Elinneus Davis in the 206th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick218
Rnd7
La'khi Roland
A slide stopped in Round 7, Pick 2, with La'khi Roland worth more than the price. Where it fits the depth chart is the real question.
Pick227
Rnd7
Stephiylan Green
By-the-book stuff, Stephiylan Green at the 227th pick squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick238
Rnd7
Noah Carter
Noah Carter in Round 7, Pick 22 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick242
Rnd7
Sullivan Absher
Sullivan Absher at No. 242 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick254
Rnd7
D'Antre Robinson
No drama and no debate, D'Antre Robinson went about where he belonged in the 254th overall pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick257
Rnd7
Kyle Altuner
A straight-up fair deal on Kyle Altuner at slot 257, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
