FutureA+
The Bears let Edwards fall into their laps, and walked away with a A-. You could see the war room lean forward. Donovan Edwards at pick No. 235 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. They executed a plan and it shows in the A-.
Every board in the league had Garcia lower, and that gap is the story. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up.
The trade work was a quiet net positive. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Add it up and this is about as clean as a draft weekend gets.
Pick Analysis
Pick39
Rnd2
Armand Membou
A clean, defensible pick in Round 2, Pick 7 with a little surplus value in Armand Membou. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick41
Rnd2
Josaiah Stewart
Josaiah Stewart in the 41st pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick72
Rnd3
Isaiah Bond
The board had Isaiah Bond higher than the Round 3 slot, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick76
Rnd3
Quinshon Judkins
A tidy little value on Quinshon Judkins in No. 76, a step better than break-even. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick85
Rnd3
Elijah Arroyo
Elijah Arroyo at slot 85 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick121
Rnd4
Lathan Ransom
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Lathan Ransom at pick 121. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick142
Rnd5
Joshua Farmer
Somehow Joshua Farmer was still sitting there in the 142nd overall pick, and they pounced on premier interior defensive lineman value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick149
Rnd5
Anthony Belton
The board fumbled Anthony Belton all the way to pick No. 149, and they scooped it up. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick197
Rnd6
JJ Pegues
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing JJ Pegues in the 197th overall pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick235
Rnd7
Donovan Edwards
Circle this one: Donovan Edwards at the 235th pick is a fall that decides a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick242
Rnd7
Gino Garcia
They reached a country mile for Gino Garcia at No. 242, and the board is aghast. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
