Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B-
ValueC+ NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Patriots: B-.

The Patriots clearly saw something nobody else did in Princewill Umanmielen, taking him 67 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.

That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Fields. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick32 Rnd1 Chris Bell
In the 32nd overall pick they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick64 Rnd2 Rod Moore
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Rod Moore. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick96 Rnd3 Malachi Fields
They let Malachi Fields come to them and pounced at Round 3, Pick 32. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick126 Rnd4 Jaishawn Barham
Jaishawn Barham at No. 126 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick132 Rnd4 J.C. Davis
J.C. Davis at slot 132 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick172 Rnd5 Gunner Stockton
No edge and no loss on Gunner Stockton in pick 172; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
Pick194 Rnd6 Earnest Greene III
Earnest Greene III at the Round 6 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick195 Rnd6 Antonio Kite
They did well to land Antonio Kite in pick 195, just ahead of his grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick201 Rnd6 Princewill Umanmielen
Princewill Umanmielen at the 201st pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick212 Rnd6 Kalil Alexander
Kalil Alexander at Round 6, Pick 32 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick247 Rnd7 James Smith
James Smith in pick No. 247 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
