If confidence were a draft strategy, the 49ers would have aced it. Malachi Lawrence at the 108th pick is 39 spots clear of where he belonged. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.

The Bernard pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the running back spot they never got to.
