Larceny in Round 4, Pick 9 lands the Steelers a B, Bullock and all. The board owed the Steelers one, and it paid up: Calen Bullock, the No. 88 name on the board, sitting there at the Round 4 slot like a gift left on the doorstep.
They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Spending an early pick on offensive lineman with quarterback, edge rusher and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. They will need Taylor III to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Amarius Mims
In slot 27 they get protection for the quarterback. Need was not the driver here.
Pick51
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Legette at the 51st pick, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick79
Rnd3
Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at pick 79 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick84
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Sedrick Van Pran at offensive lineman with quarterback, edge rusher and other spots open.
Pick88
Rnd3
Kris Abrams-Draine
By-the-book stuff, Kris Abrams-Draine at the Round 3 slot squarely in line with his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick109
Rnd4
Calen Bullock
Somehow Calen Bullock was still sitting there in No. 109, and they pounced on premier safety value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick119
Rnd4
Leonard Taylor III
The board had cheaper options than Leonard Taylor III at pick No. 119, and it noticed. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick142
Rnd5
Luke McCaffrey
They paid a round early for Luke McCaffrey in Round 5, Pick 6, more than the board wanted. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
