Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueB- NeedB TradesB+ FutureB+
Good, not great, for the 49ers: B.

The 49ers went off the board in a big way for Caleb Ransaw, 59 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.

Getting Knight Jr. where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.

Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.

Pick Analysis
Pick20 Rnd1 Mykel Williams
In pick 20 they get a double-digit-sack hope. A real need, handled.
Pick44 Rnd2 T.J. Sanders
T.J. Sanders in Round 2, Pick 12 lands just on the right side of the ledger. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick51 Rnd2 Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson in the Round 2 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick75 Rnd3 Deone Walker
Deone Walker in the 75th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick100 Rnd3 Demetrius Knight Jr.
Demetrius Knight Jr. in slot 100 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick113 Rnd4 Darius Alexander
They will replay Darius Alexander at No. 113 for years; that is how good the value is. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick138 Rnd4 Cody Simon
Cody Simon in pick 138 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick147 Rnd5 Caleb Ransaw
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Caleb Ransaw. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick149 Rnd5 Kyle Williams
They reached a country mile for Kyle Williams at No. 149, and the board is aghast. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick160 Rnd5 Luke Lachey
A real head-scratcher, Luke Lachey in Round 5, Pick 22 is miles ahead of his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick227 Rnd7 Donovan Edwards
Donovan Edwards in slot 227 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick249 Rnd7 Ty Hamilton
A straight-up fair deal on Ty Hamilton at the 249th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick252 Rnd7 Thomas Fidone II
No edge and no loss on Thomas Fidone II in the 252nd pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
