Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B-
ValueC+ NeedB TradesC+ FutureB+
The Patriots checked most of the boxes and earned a B-.

It is the swing that defines the weekend: JJ Pegues in the Round 5 slot, a good 36 spots before the room expected him.

They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. However the rest shakes out, White III at that price is a win they earned.

It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick20 Rnd1 Jalon Walker
In the 20th pick they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick38 Rnd2 Donovan Ezeiruaku
They jumped the gun on Donovan Ezeiruaku, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick44 Rnd2 Marcus Mbow
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Marcus Mbow. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick51 Rnd2 Harold Fannin Jr.
Harold Fannin Jr. at pick 51 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick69 Rnd3 Tre Harris
The board had Tre Harris higher than Round 3, Pick 5, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick81 Rnd3 Charles Grant
Charles Grant in the 81st overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick106 Rnd4 Kevin Winston Jr.
Value with a capital V on Kevin Winston Jr. in the Round 4 slot, a genuine coup. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick144 Rnd5 Trevor Etienne
No drama and no debate, Trevor Etienne went about where he belonged in pick No. 144. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick151 Rnd5 JJ Pegues
They reached a country mile for JJ Pegues at the 151st pick, and the board is aghast. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick171 Rnd5 Drew Kendall
A wild overpay on Drew Kendall in slot 171, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick220 Rnd7 Cam Horsley
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Cam Horsley well ahead of where he belonged. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick238 Rnd7 Ricky White III
Ricky White III is a better player than Round 7, Pick 22 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
