FutureB
Best value of the weekend goes to the Steelers for Chestnut: B+. Somebody in the 241st pick was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Steelers sat still while Duce Chestnut, the No. 206 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. Good, not great, and the B+ says as much.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. It is not that Frazier is a bad player; it is that the Steelers had louder needs to answer first.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick26
Rnd1
Taliese Fuaga
They took Taliese Fuaga at par in No. 26, which is nothing to complain about. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick49
Rnd2
T.J. Tampa
Good price on T.J. Tampa in the 49th pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick52
Rnd2
Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
A clean, defensible pick in slot 52 with a little surplus value in Jeremiah Trotter Jr.. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick80
Rnd3
Zach Frazier
Of all the spots to shop, they chose offensive lineman. Zach Frazier in pick 80 leaves quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots for later.
Pick116
Rnd4
Will Shipley
Will Shipley is a better player than pick No. 116 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick121
Rnd4
Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice at the Round 4 slot is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. The roster fit checks out.
Pick194
Rnd6
Layden Robinson
Layden Robinson at the 194th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick237
Rnd7
Cornelius Johnson
Cornelius Johnson at Round 7, Pick 17 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick241
Rnd7
Duce Chestnut
Steal is underselling it; Duce Chestnut at No. 241 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
