Draft Grade — Bills
Overall C+
ValueD NeedB TradesA- FutureC+
The Bills landed square in the muddy middle: C+.

The tape said wait; the Bills did not. Keaton Bills went at slot 145, a good 125 picks before the board was ready.

Getting Watson where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The Solomon pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher and tight end. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.

It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.

Pick Analysis
Pick37 Rnd2 Keon Coleman
Keon Coleman in the 37th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick65 Rnd3 Sedrick Van Pran
A big swing on Sedrick Van Pran at slot 65, well ahead of any board in the building. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick66 Rnd3 Cole Bishop
Cole Bishop at the Round 3 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
Pick68 Rnd3 Ray Davis
They reached a country mile for Ray Davis at No. 68, and the board is aghast. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick76 Rnd3 DeWayne Carter
A real head-scratcher, DeWayne Carter in pick 76 is miles ahead of his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick84 Rnd3 Javon Solomon
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Javon Solomon adds an OLB-EDGE and leaves edge rusher and tight end untouched.
Pick85 Rnd3 Patrick Paul
Patrick Paul at pick 85 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick93 Rnd3 Edefuan Ulofoshio
A wild overpay on Edefuan Ulofoshio in slot 93, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick131 Rnd4 Jha'Quan Jackson
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jha'Quan Jackson in the 131st overall pick, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick145 Rnd5 Keaton Bills
They reached into another round for Keaton Bills, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick160 Rnd5 Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. at No. 160 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick193 Rnd6 Daequan Hardy
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Daequan Hardy well ahead of where he belonged. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick200 Rnd6 Carter Bradley
Carter Bradley at pick No. 200 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick204 Rnd6 Austin Reed
Austin Reed in the 204th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick221 Rnd7 Javion Cohen
You do not let an offensive lineman like Javion Cohen reach slot 221 and blink. They did not. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick231 Rnd7 Nathaniel Watson
They will replay Nathaniel Watson at pick 231 for years; that is how good the value is. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick248 Rnd7 Deantre Prince
They went early on Deantre Prince in the Round 7 slot, and the value did not follow. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
