A franchise passer in Maye headlines a C weekend for the Patriots. Start where it matters. The Patriots took Drake Maye to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one.
Hunt has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took McCaffrey.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The Hunt pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher still on the board.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
In the end, a coin-flip class: fine today, with a wide range of outcomes ahead.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Drake Maye
In the Round 1 slot they get a franchise quarterback at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick39
Rnd2
Kingsley Suamataia
Kingsley Suamataia at slot 39 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It fills a real need, too.
Pick80
Rnd3
Cam Hart
Cam Hart at Round 3, Pick 16 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick88
Rnd3
Javon Baker
They paid sticker price for Javon Baker in No. 88, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick102
Rnd4
Trey Benson
Good price on Trey Benson in pick No. 102, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick114
Rnd4
Fabien Lovett
Fabien Lovett at the 114th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick136
Rnd4
Jalyx Hunt
Of all the spots to shop, they chose S-EDGE. Jalyx Hunt in the 136th pick leaves edge rusher for later.
Pick148
Rnd5
Brandon Coleman
They left a pile of value on the table to take Brandon Coleman this early at pick 148. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick192
Rnd6
Luke McCaffrey
They will replay Luke McCaffrey at the Round 6 slot for years; that is how good the value is. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick209
Rnd6
Tyler Owens
Tyler Owens at Round 6, Pick 34 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick214
Rnd6
Tip Reiman
A conviction pick on Tip Reiman at pick No. 214 that the board grades a round light. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
