MLongwell24 DRAFTING FOR THESteelers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Steelers a B-. Everything else got attention, and quarterback got none. That is a strange way for the Steelers to leave a draft. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
However the rest shakes out, Rice at that price is a win they earned. The Williams pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
Safety is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Kool-Aid McKinstry
In the Round 1 slot they get a potential shutdown corner. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick52
Rnd2
Zach Frazier
Zach Frazier at the 52nd pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick84
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice slid further than he should have, and No. 84 is lovely value for the wide receiver. It fills a real need, too.
Pick120
Rnd4
Darius Robinson
They paid sticker price for Darius Robinson in pick No. 120, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick121
Rnd4
James Williams
A premium they did not need to pay, James Williams a notch or two before his time. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick198
Rnd6
Michael Barrett
Value with a capital V on Michael Barrett in pick 198, a genuine coup. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick238
Rnd7
Jase McClellan
A clean, defensible pick in Round 7, Pick 18 with a little surplus value in Jase McClellan. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
