The Cowboys let Franklin fall into their laps, and walked away with a B. Call it larceny. Troy Franklin sat on the board until the Round 2 slot, and the Cowboys did not need to be asked twice. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
It is not that Turner is a bad player; it is that the Cowboys had louder needs to answer first. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped linebacker, which is a strange place to end up.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but linebacker.
Pick Analysis
Pick32
Rnd1
Dallas Turner
They read the board right and Dallas Turner was the payoff at slot 32. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick62
Rnd2
Troy Franklin
Troy Franklin at pick No. 62 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick93
Rnd3
Nazir Stackhouse
Nazir Stackhouse in No. 93 is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick94
Rnd3
Dominick Puni
They paid sticker price for Dominick Puni in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick95
Rnd3
Braelon Allen
No edge and no loss on Braelon Allen in pick 95; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick130
Rnd4
Nehemiah Pritchett
A conviction pick on Nehemiah Pritchett at Round 4, Pick 30 that the board grades a round light. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick134
Rnd4
Shemar Turner
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 134th pick on Shemar Turner with linebacker and quarterback unsolved.
Pick174
Rnd5
Jack Nelson
A straight-up fair deal on Jack Nelson at the 174th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick177
Rnd6
Malachi Moore
Value with a capital V on Malachi Moore in the 177th overall pick, a genuine coup. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick251
Rnd7
Benjamin Yurosek
Benjamin Yurosek at the 251st pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
