Draft Grade — Cowboys

FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Cowboys a B. The Cowboys did not so much draft Jase McClellan as overpay for him, 44 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
The Roberts value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The Isaac pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback, tight end and other spots.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick29
Rnd1
Edgerrin Cooper
In slot 29 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick58
Rnd2
Kris Jenkins
No edge and no loss on Kris Jenkins in No. 58; it is a wash and a sensible one. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick89
Rnd3
Devontez Walker
Devontez Walker in pick No. 89 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick90
Rnd3
Adisa Isaac
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went edge rusher with Adisa Isaac while clear needs at quarterback, tight end and other spots sat open.
Pick91
Rnd3
Dominick Puni
Dominick Puni at the 91st overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick92
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter at Round 3, Pick 29 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick126
Rnd4
Max Melton
Fair-plus on Max Melton, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick134
Rnd4
Sataoa Laumea
Sataoa Laumea in the Round 4 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick165
Rnd5
Jack Nelson
A reach on Jack Nelson in pick 165; the board had better options right there. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick212
Rnd6
Jase McClellan
Jase McClellan at the 212th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick247
Rnd7
Willie Roberts
They robbed the room for Willie Roberts here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
