Draft Grade — Bears
Overall A-
ValueC+ NeedB TradesA+ FutureA+
The Bears left with their quarterback, and a A- to match.

The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Bears spent their marquee pick on J.J. McCarthy, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.

They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. They are betting Smith proves the room right and everyone else wrong.

Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.

Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, J.J. McCarthy and all.

Pick Analysis
Pick9 Rnd1 Rome Odunze
In the 9th pick they get a true top target. A real need, handled.
Pick14 Rnd1 J.J. McCarthy
In the 14th overall pick they get their guy under center for the next decade, even if it was a touch early. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick34 Rnd2 Jordan Morgan
No edge and no loss on Jordan Morgan in pick No. 34; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick36 Rnd2 Darius Robinson
By-the-book stuff, Darius Robinson at Round 2, Pick 4 squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick45 Rnd2 Cooper Beebe
They paid sticker price for Cooper Beebe in pick 45, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick67 Rnd3 Sedrick Van Pran
They took Sedrick Van Pran at par in the Round 3 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick75 Rnd3 Kris Abrams-Draine
Kris Abrams-Draine in No. 75 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick78 Rnd3 Maason Smith
A wild overpay on Maason Smith in slot 78, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick122 Rnd4 Theo Johnson
Theo Johnson in Round 4, Pick 22 is fair value, right on his grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick150 Rnd5 Tommy Eichenberg
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 5 slot with a little surplus value in Tommy Eichenberg. A need, and now a little less of one.
