Draft Grade — Chiefs
Overall D+
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureA+
The Chiefs robbed the room for Johnson. Final grade: D+.

The Chiefs lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. Hard to defend, and the D+ reflects that.

They will answer for taking cornerback early while quarterback and running back went begging. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. If Louis pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.

Landing Johnson that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.

In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.

Pick Analysis
Pick40 Rnd2 Zion Young
Zion Young in pick 40 is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick63 Rnd2 Blake Miller
By-the-book stuff, Blake Miller at the 63rd pick squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick74 Rnd3 Chris Johnson
Circle this one: Chris Johnson at the 74th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick88 Rnd3 Malachi Fields
Malachi Fields at the Round 3 slot is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick97 Rnd3 Markel Bell
Markel Bell in slot 97 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick100 Rnd3 Malik Muhammad
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback and running back to take Malik Muhammad, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Pick109 Rnd4 Jaishawn Barham
They took Jaishawn Barham at par in No. 109, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick125 Rnd4 Kyle Louis
They reached a country mile for Kyle Louis at the Round 4 slot, and the board is aghast. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick139 Rnd5 Tim Keenan III
Tim Keenan III at the 139th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick146 Rnd5 Sam Roush
Sam Roush in pick No. 146 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick208 Rnd6 Miles Kitselman
No edge and no loss on Miles Kitselman in pick 208; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick250 Rnd7 Riley Mahlman
A conviction pick on Riley Mahlman at Round 7, Pick 34 that the board grades a round light. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
