McCarthy is the Bears' new face under center. Grade: B.

The search is over. The Bears handed the keys to J.J. McCarthy, and the whole operation now runs on his development. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.

Reaching for Smith left real value on the table behind him. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. The Smith pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots still on the board.

Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Wiley pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

They paid sticker price for Darius Robinson in pick 36, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.

This one needs a full-page explanation: Christian Mahogany in the 75th pick, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.

A curious use of slot 78. Interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots needed the pick; a DT-EDGE in Maason Smith did not.
