Draft Grade — Cardinals
Overall
A-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureA+
The steal of the weekend belongs to the Cardinals and Cowing: A-. When a board-topper like Jacob Cowing slides to pick 227, you do not overthink it, and the Cardinals did not.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
They will answer for taking cornerback early while quarterback, tight end and other spots went begging.
Trust the process, because this time the process plainly worked.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Dallas Turner
In the Round 1 slot they get juice off the edge. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick35
Rnd2
Kris Abrams-Draine
Kris Abrams-Draine in No. 35 is fair value, right on his grade. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick38
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
Edgerrin Cooper at Round 2, Pick 6 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It fills a real need, too.
Pick67
Rnd3
Josh Newton
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Josh Newton adds a cornerback and leaves quarterback, tight end and other spots untouched.
Pick73
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
Sedrick Van Pran at slot 73 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick81
Rnd3
Donovan Edwards
A straight-up fair deal on Donovan Edwards at the 81st pick, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick103
Rnd4
Devontez Walker
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Devontez Walker. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick105
Rnd4
Donovan Jackson
They jumped the gun on Donovan Jackson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick133
Rnd4
Sataoa Laumea
A premium they did not need to pay, Sataoa Laumea a notch or two before his time. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick140
Rnd5
Cole Bishop
Cole Bishop at the 140th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick165
Rnd5
Ashton Gillotte
No edge and no loss on Ashton Gillotte in slot 165; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick198
Rnd6
Ricky Pearsall
They paid sticker price for Ricky Pearsall in No. 198, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick204
Rnd6
Curtis Jacobs
By-the-book stuff, Curtis Jacobs at pick No. 204 squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick224
Rnd7
Francisco Mauigoa
Francisco Mauigoa in pick 224 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick227
Rnd7
Jacob Cowing
Jacob Cowing at the 227th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
