Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B+
ValueB- NeedB TradesA+ FutureA
The Patriots won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: B+.

The trade table was a mismatch, and the Patriots were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value. The bottom line is a respectable B+.

The Wiley pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. Ikem Ekwonu gives the group a proven body among the projects.

Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

Pick Analysis
Pick33 Rnd2 Graham Barton
A quiet steal in No. 33: Graham Barton for less than the market said. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick34 Rnd2 J.J. McCarthy
A clean, defensible pick in Round 2, Pick 2 with a little surplus value in J.J. McCarthy. The roster fit checks out.
Pick39 Rnd2 Troy Franklin
Good price on Troy Franklin in pick No. 39, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick65 Rnd3 Blake Corum
Value said wait; Blake Corum in slot 65 says they were not listening. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick68 Rnd3 Malachi Corley
They let Malachi Corley come to them and pounced at the Round 3 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick101 Rnd4 Khyree Jackson
Khyree Jackson in pick 101 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick103 Rnd4 James Williams
James Williams at the 103rd overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick137 Rnd5 Tommy Eichenberg
Tommy Eichenberg at the 137th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick180 Rnd6 Jared Wiley
A big swing on Jared Wiley at the 180th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick193 Rnd6 Johnny Dixon
They did well to land Johnny Dixon in pick 193, just ahead of his grade. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick231 Rnd7 LaDarius Henderson
LaDarius Henderson at pick No. 231 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
