Draft Grade — Saints

FutureB-
The Saints drew a line under the quarterback search with Simpson: B. The search is over. The Saints handed the keys to Ty Simpson, and the whole operation now runs on his development. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
Slaughter at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The running back hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They are betting Capehart proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Ty Simpson
In No. 2 they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick35
Rnd2
Joshua Josephs
Joshua Josephs at Round 2, Pick 3 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick66
Rnd3
Jake Slaughter
Jake Slaughter at the Round 3 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick131
Rnd4
Bryce Lance
Bryce Lance is a better player than slot 131 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick137
Rnd4
DJ McKinney
Quietly one of the better values of the day, DJ McKinney at pick No. 137. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick142
Rnd5
DeMonte Capehart
A premium they did not need to pay, DeMonte Capehart a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick171
Rnd5
Max Iheanachor
Max Iheanachor in pick 171 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick181
Rnd6
Xavier Nwankpa
Xavier Nwankpa in the 181st overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A minor need, but a need all the same.
