Draft Grade — Patriots

Walker should have been long gone. The Patriots pounced, and earned a B-.

Call it larceny. Jalon Walker sat on the board until the 69th overall pick, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice. The bottom line is a respectable B-.

A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. Gillotte has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.

They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Tetairoa McMillan
They paid sticker price for Tetairoa McMillan in No. 4, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick38 Rnd2 Aireontae Ersery
Aireontae Ersery at pick No. 38 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick69 Rnd3 Jalon Walker
Jalon Walker in pick 69 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick77 Rnd3 Ashton Gillotte
They talked themselves into Ashton Gillotte at the 77th overall pick, and the board did not agree. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick106 Rnd4 Gunnar Helm
Gunnar Helm slid further than he should have, and Round 4, Pick 4 is lovely value for the tight end. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick144 Rnd5 Jake Majors
Jake Majors in the 144th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick171 Rnd5 Trevor Etienne
Trevor Etienne at the Round 5 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick220 Rnd7 Jaylen Reed
Circle this one: Jaylen Reed at slot 220 is a fall that decides a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick238 Rnd7 Cam Horsley
They went early on Cam Horsley in pick No. 238, and the value did not follow. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
