Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall B-

More right than wrong for the Steelers, and a B- to prove it.

The tape said wait; the Steelers did not. J. Michael Sturdivant went at Round 7, Pick 14, a good 34 picks before the board was ready. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.

Green at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. The Miller pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher, running back and other spots still on the board.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.

Pick Analysis
Pick14 Rnd1 Jordyn Tyson
In the 14th pick they get a difference-maker at receiver. A real need, handled.
Pick45 Rnd2 Olaivavega Ioane
They paid sticker price for Olaivavega Ioane in slot 45, and that is fine. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick78 Rnd3 LaNorris Sellers
They let LaNorris Sellers come to them and pounced at pick No. 78. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick80 Rnd3 Will Lee III
A tidy little value on Will Lee III in No. 80, a step better than break-even. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick99 Rnd3 Zakee Wheatley
A tidy bit of business in pick 99, where Zakee Wheatley graded well above the range. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick113 Rnd4 D'Angelo Ponds
D'Angelo Ponds in the 113th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick133 Rnd4 Blake Miller
A surprising call. With edge rusher, running back and other spots still to address, they spent the 133rd overall pick on Blake Miller, an offensive lineman they were not short of.
Pick154 Rnd5 Jacob Rodriguez
They paid a round early for Jacob Rodriguez in the Round 5 slot, more than the board wanted. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick213 Rnd6 Taylen Green
Taylen Green in No. 213 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick214 Rnd6 Bryce Foster
A big swing on Bryce Foster at slot 214, well ahead of any board in the building. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick217 Rnd7 James Smith
James Smith at pick 217 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick229 Rnd7 J. Michael Sturdivant
J. Michael Sturdivant in Round 7, Pick 14 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
