Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedB
TradesD
FutureA+
The Patriots got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the B-. The Patriots treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending slot 203 on Princewill Umanmielen a full 65 spots early. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. However the rest shakes out, Branch at that price is a win they earned.
They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick62
Rnd2
Taurean York
They did well to land Taurean York in pick 62, just ahead of his grade. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick130
Rnd4
Zachariah Branch
Zachariah Branch at the 130th overall pick is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick156
Rnd5
Kage Casey
Kage Casey at the 156th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick160
Rnd5
Nic Anderson
A quiet steal in Round 5, Pick 20: Nic Anderson for less than the market said. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick170
Rnd5
Aaron Anderson
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Aaron Anderson. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick193
Rnd6
Bud Clark
They went early on Bud Clark in slot 193, and the value did not follow. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick203
Rnd6
Princewill Umanmielen
Princewill Umanmielen in No. 203 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick209
Rnd6
Isaiah Jatta
Isaiah Jatta at Round 6, Pick 30 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick218
Rnd7
Kalil Alexander
Kalil Alexander in the Round 7 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick245
Rnd7
Peyton Bowen
No edge and no loss on Peyton Bowen in pick No. 245; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick251
Rnd7
Brandon Inniss
They paid sticker price for Brandon Inniss in slot 251, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick252
Rnd7
Jalen Thompson
A wild overpay on Jalen Thompson in pick 252, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
