Dozers1 DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueB+
NeedB-
TradesB-
FutureB-
Larceny in the 185th pick lands the 49ers a B-, Skattebo and all. Call it larceny. Cam Skattebo sat on the board until slot 185, and the 49ers did not need to be asked twice.
The wide receiver hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Broughton reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. They reloaded the coverage unit in bulk.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Will Johnson
In the 11th overall pick they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. More want than need.
Pick43
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
Malaki Starks at the Round 2 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick75
Rnd3
Tate Ratledge
A straight-up fair deal on Tate Ratledge at the 75th pick, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick99
Rnd3
Jake Majors
Jake Majors in No. 99 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick111
Rnd4
Joshua Farmer
Joshua Farmer at pick 111 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick137
Rnd4
Vernon Broughton
A premium they did not need to pay, Vernon Broughton a notch or two before his time. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick185
Rnd6
Cam Skattebo
Steal is underselling it; Cam Skattebo at slot 185 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick226
Rnd7
Karene Reid
Karene Reid in pick No. 226 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It fills a real need, too.
Pick230
Rnd7
Jordan Hancock
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Jordan Hancock in the 230th pick, plain and simple. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick249
Rnd7
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
They will replay Jamon Dumas-Johnson at pick 249 for years; that is how good the value is. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick255
Rnd7
Clay Webb
The board fumbled Clay Webb all the way to the 255th overall pick, and they scooped it up. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
