Draft Grade — Chiefs
Overall
D-
ValueB+
NeedB-
TradesF
FutureB-
The Chiefs let Styles fall and pounced. Final grade: D-. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Chiefs did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D-.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. If Casey pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. That is a linebacker worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick9
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In pick No. 9 they get an enforcer at safety at fair value. More want than need.
Pick21
Rnd1
Avieon Terrell
Avieon Terrell at No. 21 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick40
Rnd2
Chris Brazzell II
Good price on Chris Brazzell II in pick 40, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick42
Rnd2
Caleb Banks
Caleb Banks is a better player than the 42nd pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick72
Rnd3
Sonny Styles
Taking Sonny Styles in the Round 3 slot is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick74
Rnd3
Emmett Johnson
Emmett Johnson at Round 3, Pick 10 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick104
Rnd4
Joe Royer
They let Joe Royer come to them and pounced at No. 104. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick109
Rnd4
Caden Curry
Fair-plus on Caden Curry, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick120
Rnd4
Deion Burks
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Deion Burks at the Round 4 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick121
Rnd4
Kage Casey
A premium they did not need to pay, Kage Casey a notch or two before his time. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
