Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B
ValueC+ NeedB TradesA FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Texans, and a B to prove it.

The Texans put a flag in the ground for Matthew Jones, 55 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.

The Smith pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.

They left with running back solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.

Pick Analysis
Pick28 Rnd1 Terrion Arnold
Terrion Arnold at pick 28 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick56 Rnd2 Cade Stover
They left a pile of value on the table to take Cade Stover this early at the Round 2 slot. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick71 Rnd3 McKinnley Jackson
McKinnley Jackson at No. 71 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick99 Rnd3 Blake Corum
Nice patience on Blake Corum, who had no business lasting to the 99th overall pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick126 Rnd4 James Williams
A tidy little value on James Williams in Round 4, Pick 26, a step better than break-even. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick173 Rnd5 Ainias Smith
Ainias Smith in pick No. 173 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick199 Rnd6 Matthew Jones
Matthew Jones at slot 199 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick203 Rnd6 Jaylan Ford
Jaylan Ford in pick No. 203 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick216 Rnd6 Elijah Jones
Somehow Elijah Jones was still sitting there in No. 216, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick224 Rnd7 Joshua Cephus
This one needs a full-page explanation: Joshua Cephus in the Round 7 slot, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick247 Rnd7 Taulia Tagovailoa
Taulia Tagovailoa in the 247th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
