Draft Grade — Dolphins
Overall D+
ValueB NeedA- TradesF FutureA+
A franchise passer in Moore headlines a D+ weekend for the Dolphins.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Dolphins did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D+ is the result.

They have staked the next five years on Dante Moore, which is the only story that really matters here. The cost of the Johnson reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

Klare at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and wide receiver is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick1 Rnd1 Rueben Bain Jr.
In the 1st pick they get a problem off the edge at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick4 Rnd1 Dante Moore
In the 4th overall pick they get the face of the franchise. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick34 Rnd2 Christen Miller
They read the board right and Christen Miller was the payoff at pick No. 34. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick75 Rnd3 Michael Taaffe
Michael Taaffe in pick 75 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick95 Rnd3 Whit Weeks
They paid sticker price for Whit Weeks in slot 95, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick105 Rnd4 Max Klare
Max Klare at the Round 4 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick126 Rnd4 Jaishawn Barham
Jaishawn Barham slid further than he should have, and Round 4, Pick 26 is lovely value for the linebacker. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick144 Rnd5 Chase Bisontis
Chase Bisontis at No. 144 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick218 Rnd7 Desmond Reid
They went early on Desmond Reid in pick 218, and the value did not follow. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick228 Rnd7 Avery Johnson
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Avery Johnson well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick248 Rnd7 Fernando Carmona
The board had cheaper options than Fernando Carmona at the 248th pick, and it noticed. It fills a real need, too.
