FutureC+
Mendoza is the Dolphins' new face under center. Grade: D-. The Dolphins lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. Put together, it is a D-.
The whole projection now runs through Fernando Mendoza; hit there and everything else looks smarter. They are betting Graves proves the room right and everyone else wrong. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
With edge rusher, running back and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them. The Green pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, edge rusher very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In the 4th pick they get the face of the franchise, reach and all. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick11
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In pick 11 they get a ballhawk on the back end, outstanding value to boot.
Pick43
Rnd2
Olaivavega Ioane
No drama and no debate, Olaivavega Ioane went about where he belonged in No. 43. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick69
Rnd3
Darrell Jackson Jr.
A tidy little value on Darrell Jackson Jr. in the 69th overall pick, a step better than break-even. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick75
Rnd3
Colton Hood
Colton Hood at pick No. 75 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick77
Rnd3
Keith Abney II
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending slot 77 on Keith Abney II with edge rusher, running back and other spots unsolved.
Pick78
Rnd3
Austin Siereveld
Austin Siereveld at the Round 3 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The roster fit checks out.
Pick84
Rnd3
Omar Cooper Jr.
Omar Cooper Jr. at Round 3, Pick 20 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick95
Rnd3
Eli Stowers
A slide stopped in the Round 3 slot, with Eli Stowers worth more than the price. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick111
Rnd4
Charles Jagusah
They paid a round early for Charles Jagusah in pick 111, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick151
Rnd5
Aaron Graves
This one needs a full-page explanation: Aaron Graves in Round 5, Pick 11, miles early. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick225
Rnd7
Taylen Green
They robbed the room for Taylen Green here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick231
Rnd7
Trey Zuhn III
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Trey Zuhn III. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
