Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B-
ValueC NeedB TradesA+ FutureD+
The Texans won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: B-.

If you want a masterclass in dealing, watch the Texans, who turned every swap into a profit this weekend.

Wilson has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. With edge rusher, offensive lineman and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.

Pick Analysis
Pick18 Rnd1 Byron Murphy II
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the defensive front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick50 Rnd2 Roman Wilson
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Roman Wilson well ahead of where he belonged. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick71 Rnd3 Trey Benson
No drama and no debate, Trey Benson went about where he belonged in slot 71. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick94 Rnd3 Tykee Smith
They paid sticker price for Tykee Smith in the 94th overall pick, and that is fine. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick97 Rnd3 DeWayne Carter
DeWayne Carter at Round 3, Pick 34 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick100 Rnd3 DJ James
DJ James at No. 100 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick120 Rnd4 James Williams
A curious use of pick No. 120. Edge rusher, offensive lineman and other spots needed the pick; a safety in James Williams did not.
Pick175 Rnd5 Michael Barrett
Michael Barrett at pick 175 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick222 Rnd7 David Ugwoegbu
They paid a round early for David Ugwoegbu in Round 7, Pick 2, more than the board wanted. The roster logic is harder to follow.
