Draft Grade — Texans
Overall D-
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The Texans got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D-.

If confidence were a draft strategy, the Texans would have aced it. Jared Wiley at slot 127 is 73 spots clear of where he belonged. A D- that will need time and luck to look better.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The Smith pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.

The Mims value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.

In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Rome Odunze
In the Round 1 slot they get a weapon on the perimeter at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick35 Rnd2 Chop Robinson
Chop Robinson in the 35th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick59 Rnd2 Amarius Mims
Amarius Mims at No. 59 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick63 Rnd2 Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe at pick 63 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick64 Rnd2 Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in pick No. 64 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The roster fit checks out.
Pick65 Rnd3 Jaylen Wright
A conviction pick on Jaylen Wright at slot 65 that the board grades a round light. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick94 Rnd3 Maason Smith
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Maason Smith at DT-EDGE with interior defensive lineman open.
Pick95 Rnd3 James Williams
A swing that ignored the value entirely, James Williams well ahead of where he belonged. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick123 Rnd4 Josh Newton
A straight-up fair deal on Josh Newton at pick 123, value and slot in agreement. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick127 Rnd4 Jared Wiley
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jared Wiley. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick224 Rnd7 Keaton Bills
They paid a round early for Keaton Bills in slot 224, more than the board wanted. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick238 Rnd7 Austin Reed
A clean, defensible pick in the 238th pick with a little surplus value in Austin Reed. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick253 Rnd7 Jalen Coker
No edge and no loss on Jalen Coker in No. 253; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
