Draft Grade — Bears
Overall A-
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesA+ FutureA+
McCoy should have been long gone. The Bears pounced, and earned a A-.

Thirty-one other rooms let Bru McCoy slide, and the Bears were the ones holding the card at pick No. 225. Highway robbery. Just about everything broke right, and the A- follows.

The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. Spending an early pick on safety with quarterback open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.

They will need Van Pran to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.

In short, they turned a good board into a better roster, and it shows.

Pick Analysis
Pick16 Rnd1 Chop Robinson
In the Round 1 slot they get a problem off the edge. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick17 Rnd1 Jared Verse
In the 17th pick they get a double-digit-sack hope at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick35 Rnd2 Nate Wiggins
Nate Wiggins in pick No. 35 is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick46 Rnd2 Calen Bullock
They paid sticker price for Calen Bullock in slot 46, and that is fine. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick49 Rnd2 Sedrick Van Pran
They jumped the gun on Sedrick Van Pran, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The roster fit checks out.
Pick68 Rnd3 Malachi Corley
Malachi Corley in No. 68 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick80 Rnd3 Jackson Powers-Johnson
A premium they did not need to pay, Jackson Powers-Johnson a notch or two before his time. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick81 Rnd3 Ruke Orhorhoro
Ruke Orhorhoro is a better player than Round 3, Pick 17 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick103 Rnd4 Christian Haynes
They did well to land Christian Haynes in the 103rd overall pick, just ahead of his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick104 Rnd4 Payton Wilson
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Payton Wilson. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick132 Rnd4 James Williams
A curious use of pick 132. Quarterback needed the pick; a safety in James Williams did not.
Pick141 Rnd5 Tyler Guyton
Tyler Guyton at Round 5, Pick 5 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick182 Rnd6 Will Shipley
A tidy bit of business in the 182nd pick, where Will Shipley graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick225 Rnd7 Bru McCoy
Bru McCoy at slot 225 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
