Draft Grade — Lions
Overall
B+
ValueC+
NeedC
TradesA+
FutureA+
Nobody dealt better than the Lions this weekend: B+. The war room fell hard for D'Antre Robinson, and it showed at the 239th overall pick: 57 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B+.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. The Bolden pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. The Lions paired the rookies with proven help, Kool-Aid McKinstry leading the way.
Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick41
Rnd2
KJ Bolden
A top-tier safety at a bargain, KJ Bolden in No. 41, plain and simple. Where it fits the depth chart is the real question.
Pick50
Rnd2
Kelley Jones
A straight-up fair deal on Kelley Jones at Round 2, Pick 18, value and slot in agreement. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick64
Rnd2
Jayden Maiava
Jayden Maiava at pick 64 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick80
Rnd3
Samson Okunlola
No drama and no debate, Samson Okunlola went about where he belonged in the 80th pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick99
Rnd3
Jaylen McClain
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jaylen McClain in the 99th overall pick. Hard to map this one onto the depth chart at all.
Pick113
Rnd4
Raylen Wilson
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 4 slot with a little surplus value in Raylen Wilson. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick120
Rnd4
Kameryn Crawford
Kameryn Crawford in the 120th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick131
Rnd4
Jordan Marshall
A real head-scratcher, Jordan Marshall in the Round 4 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick149
Rnd5
Ian Moore
Ian Moore at No. 149 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick189
Rnd6
Jermaine Mathews Jr.
Circle this one: Jermaine Mathews Jr. at slot 189 is a fall that decides a draft. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick216
Rnd6
Jake Guarnera
Jake Guarnera at pick No. 216 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick217
Rnd6
Benjamin Brahmer
Benjamin Brahmer in pick 217 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
Pick218
Rnd6
Andrew Rappleyea
They paid up for Andrew Rappleyea at Round 6, Pick 39 when waiting would have done the job. It fits a board better than it fits this team.
Pick221
Rnd6
Cody Jackson
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Cody Jackson. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick232
Rnd7
Stephiylan Green
They talked themselves into Stephiylan Green at pick 232, and the board did not agree. Not a spot anyone had flagged, which makes it a head-scratcher.
Pick238
Rnd7
Tavion Gadson
They left a pile of value on the table to take Tavion Gadson this early at Round 7, Pick 17. The roster reasoning here is anyone's guess.
Pick239
Rnd7
D'Antre Robinson
D'Antre Robinson at the 239th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Need-wise, a curious use of the pick.
Pick241
Rnd7
Bryce Thornton
Bryce Thornton at No. 241 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The roster logic is harder to follow.
Pick253
Rnd7
Daevin Hobbs
Daevin Hobbs at the 253rd overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It does not line up with the team's obvious holes.
Pick254
Rnd7
Desmond Umeozulu
Desmond Umeozulu at slot 254 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
