FutureA-
Maiava is the plan now, and the Lions grade out a D+. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Lions did exactly that with Kam Franklin in No. 152. Put together, it is a D+.
They have staked the next five years on Jayden Maiava, which is the only story that really matters here. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. On value alone, Alexander makes the weekend a net positive.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Jayden Maiava
In pick 30 they get their quarterback of the future, though the board says they badly overpaid.
Pick41
Rnd2
KJ Bolden
KJ Bolden at No. 41 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Where it fits the depth chart is the real question.
Pick60
Rnd2
Jamari Sharpe
Value said wait; Jamari Sharpe in pick No. 60 says they were not listening. It fits a board better than it fits this team.
Pick77
Rnd3
Keon Sabb
Keon Sabb in the 77th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Not a spot anyone had flagged, which makes it a head-scratcher.
Pick78
Rnd3
Samson Okunlola
Samson Okunlola in slot 78 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick89
Rnd3
Jaylen McClain
Jaylen McClain at Round 3, Pick 25 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was not a hole anyone had circled.
Pick90
Rnd3
Jyaire Hill
A straight-up fair deal on Jyaire Hill at No. 90, value and slot in agreement. The roster logic is harder to follow.
Pick91
Rnd3
Anto Saka
This one needs a full-page explanation: Anto Saka in the 91st pick, miles early. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick92
Rnd3
Bear Alexander
Taking Bear Alexander in the Round 3 slot is close to grand larceny; an interior defensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick93
Rnd3
Raylen Wilson
Raylen Wilson at slot 93 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Need-wise, a curious use of the pick.
Pick114
Rnd4
Blake Frazier
Blake Frazier at pick 114 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick128
Rnd4
Jordan Marshall
A big swing on Jordan Marshall at pick No. 128, well ahead of any board in the building. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick152
Rnd5
Kam Franklin
They left a pile of value on the table to take Kam Franklin this early at Round 5, Pick 15. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick191
Rnd6
Andrew Rappleyea
Andrew Rappleyea at the 191st overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It does not line up with the team's obvious holes.
Pick200
Rnd6
Benjamin Brahmer
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Benjamin Brahmer. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
Pick217
Rnd6
Sammy Omosigho
They paid sticker price for Sammy Omosigho in pick 217, and that is fine. The roster reasoning here is anyone's guess.
Pick223
Rnd7
Stephiylan Green
They talked themselves into Stephiylan Green at Round 7, Pick 4, and the board did not agree. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick232
Rnd7
Noah Carter
A real head-scratcher, Noah Carter in No. 232 is miles ahead of his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick235
Rnd7
Jay'Vion Cole
No edge and no loss on Jay'Vion Cole in slot 235; it is a wash and a sensible one. Hard to map this one onto the depth chart at all.
Pick239
Rnd7
Johntay Cook
They read the board right and Johntay Cook was the payoff at the 239th overall pick. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
