Draft Grade — Lions
Overall B
ValueC+ NeedC TradesA+ FutureA
The Lions fleeced the room on the phones and earned a B.

There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Lions started one anyway for AJ Green, 58 picks ahead of schedule. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.

Alexander at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.

They will answer for taking safety early while linebacker, wide receiver and other spots went begging. A whole weekend of picks and linebacker is somehow still a want.

Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.

Pick Analysis
Pick39 Rnd2 KJ Bolden
A curious use of the 39th pick. Linebacker, wide receiver and other spots needed the pick; a safety in KJ Bolden did not.
Pick42 Rnd2 Kelley Jones
They bypassed pressing needs at linebacker, wide receiver and other spots to take Kelley Jones, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Pick65 Rnd3 Jyaire Hill
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Jyaire Hill adds a cornerback and leaves linebacker, wide receiver and other spots untouched.
Pick82 Rnd3 Jaylen McClain
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Jaylen McClain in No. 82 leaves linebacker, wide receiver and other spots for later.
Pick90 Rnd3 Samson Okunlola
Samson Okunlola in pick No. 90 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick91 Rnd3 Dylan Raiola
Dylan Raiola in slot 91 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick94 Rnd3 Bear Alexander
A surprising call. With linebacker, wide receiver and other spots still to address, they spent slot 94 on Bear Alexander, an interior defensive lineman they were not short of.
Pick110 Rnd4 Jordan Marshall
A want over a need in pick No. 110: Jordan Marshall adds a running back while linebacker, wide receiver and other spots keeps waiting.
Pick128 Rnd4 AJ Green
A swing that ignored the value entirely, AJ Green well ahead of where he belonged. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick130 Rnd4 Blake Frazier
Blake Frazier at pick 130 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick207 Rnd6 Noah Carter
Noah Carter at No. 207 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick210 Rnd6 Tavion Gadson
Tavion Gadson at the 210th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
