Larceny in the Round 3 slot lands the Lions a D, Scott and all. Some picks age like wine; D'Antre Robinson at No. 249 will need to, sitting 54 spots clear of his grade.
Getting Scott where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. With wide receiver unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them.
Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick Analysis
Pick32
Rnd1
Tae Johnson
A surprising call. With wide receiver still to address, they spent the 32nd overall pick on Tae Johnson, a safety they were not short of.
Pick43
Rnd2
Kelley Jones
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Kelley Jones at cornerback with wide receiver open.
Pick75
Rnd3
Samson Okunlola
They paid up for Samson Okunlola at Round 3, Pick 11 when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick78
Rnd3
Jamari Sharpe
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Jamari Sharpe while clear needs at wide receiver sat open.
Pick89
Rnd3
Jaylen McClain
A curious use of No. 89. Wide receiver needed the pick; a safety in Jaylen McClain did not.
Pick90
Rnd3
Justin Scott
They bypassed pressing needs at wide receiver to take Justin Scott, an interior defensive lineman that was not the priority.
Pick92
Rnd3
Anto Saka
They left a pile of value on the table to take Anto Saka this early at pick No. 92. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick93
Rnd3
Bear Alexander
A want over a need in pick 93: Bear Alexander adds an interior defensive lineman while wide receiver keeps waiting.
Pick95
Rnd3
Dylan Raiola
Dylan Raiola in the 95th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick96
Rnd3
Andrew Sprague
Good price on Andrew Sprague in the 96th pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick117
Rnd4
Sahir West
Of all the spots to shop, they chose interior defensive lineman. Sahir West in slot 117 leaves wide receiver for later.
Pick126
Rnd4
Myles Graham
By-the-book stuff, Myles Graham at the Round 4 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick130
Rnd4
Kameryn Crawford
Kameryn Crawford at Round 4, Pick 29 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick150
Rnd5
Jordan Marshall
A big swing on Jordan Marshall at pick No. 150, well ahead of any board in the building. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick163
Rnd5
Jalen Mayo
The board fumbled Jalen Mayo all the way to pick 163, and they scooped it up. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick173
Rnd5
Robert Fitzgerald
Robert Fitzgerald in the 173rd overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A pick in search of a role on this roster.
Pick204
Rnd6
Jermaine Mathews Jr.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Jermaine Mathews Jr. in the 204th pick, plain and simple. Hard to map this one onto the depth chart at all.
Pick205
Rnd6
Jake Guarnera
Jake Guarnera in No. 205 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick207
Rnd6
Andrew Rappleyea
They talked themselves into Andrew Rappleyea at slot 207, and the board did not agree. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick244
Rnd7
Stephiylan Green
They reached into another round for Stephiylan Green, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The roster reasoning here is anyone's guess.
Pick246
Rnd7
Tavion Gadson
Tavion Gadson at Round 7, Pick 25 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
Pick249
Rnd7
D'Antre Robinson
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for D'Antre Robinson. It does not line up with the team's obvious holes.
