FutureC
The Lions lost the trade table, and the C- tells the story. The rest of the league had time to spare on Kameryn Crawford; the Lions did not wait, grabbing him 45 spots ahead at the Round 4 slot.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Alexander. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.
The veteran additions, Kool-Aid McKinstry chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.
Pick Analysis
Pick29
Rnd1
Kelley Jones
In the 29th pick they get a sticky cover corner, though the board says they badly overpaid. Need was not the driver here.
Pick33
Rnd2
Arch Manning
They let Arch Manning come to them and pounced at No. 33. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick57
Rnd2
Tae Johnson
Tae Johnson in slot 57 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Hard to map this one onto the depth chart at all.
Pick89
Rnd3
Samson Okunlola
No edge and no loss on Samson Okunlola in the 89th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick90
Rnd3
Xavier Atkins
Xavier Atkins at pick 90 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick93
Rnd3
Bray Hubbard
They barely believed it either: Bray Hubbard still on the board at Round 3, Pick 29. The roster logic is harder to follow.
Pick95
Rnd3
Bear Alexander
Somehow Bear Alexander was still sitting there in No. 95, and they pounced on premier interior defensive lineman value. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick96
Rnd3
Jaylen McClain
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jaylen McClain. The roster reasoning here is anyone's guess.
Pick101
Rnd3
Anto Saka
A wild overpay on Anto Saka in the Round 3 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick102
Rnd3
Jyaire Hill
Nice patience on Jyaire Hill, who had no business lasting to Round 3, Pick 38. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
Pick127
Rnd4
Sahir West
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Sahir West well ahead of where he belonged. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick134
Rnd4
Antwan Raymond
Antwan Raymond in pick 134 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick135
Rnd4
Kameryn Crawford
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Kameryn Crawford. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick152
Rnd5
Earl Little Jr.
Earl Little Jr. in pick No. 152 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. This was not a hole anyone had circled.
Pick175
Rnd5
Blake Frazier
Blake Frazier at pick 175 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick188
Rnd6
Jermaine Mathews Jr.
The board had Jermaine Mathews Jr. higher than the 188th overall pick, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. Where it fits the depth chart is the real question.
Pick229
Rnd7
Andrew Rappleyea
A conviction pick on Andrew Rappleyea at pick No. 229 that the board grades a round light. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick230
Rnd7
Bryce Thornton
A tidy little value on Bryce Thornton in the 230th pick, a step better than break-even. A pick in search of a role on this roster.
Pick233
Rnd7
Jordan Faison
Jordan Faison at Round 7, Pick 12 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick246
Rnd7
Jake Guarnera
Value with a capital V on Jake Guarnera in No. 246, a genuine coup. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
