FutureB
A masterclass at the trade table lands the Lions a B. If confidence were a draft strategy, the Lions would have aced it. Braylan Shelby at Round 6, Pick 37 is 76 spots clear of where he belonged.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. The Bolden pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
The wide receiver hole is the one line item this class does not answer. It is not that Bolden is a bad player; it is that the Lions had louder needs to answer first.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick39
Rnd2
KJ Bolden
They zigged when the board said zag, taking KJ Bolden at safety with wide receiver open.
Pick41
Rnd2
Kelley Jones
A curious use of slot 41. Wide receiver needed the pick; a cornerback in Kelley Jones did not.
Pick62
Rnd2
Anthony Smith
They reached into another round for Anthony Smith, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick76
Rnd3
Chris Peal
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Chris Peal in the 76th overall pick leaves wide receiver for later.
Pick78
Rnd3
Samson Okunlola
A premium they did not need to pay, Samson Okunlola a notch or two before his time. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick95
Rnd3
LaNorris Sellers
By-the-book stuff, LaNorris Sellers at pick 95 squarely in line with his ranking. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick114
Rnd4
Jaylen McClain
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending Round 4, Pick 13 on Jaylen McClain with wide receiver unsolved.
Pick131
Rnd4
Ian Moore
This one needs a full-page explanation: Ian Moore in pick No. 131, miles early. It fills a real need, too.
Pick150
Rnd5
AJ Green
A real head-scratcher, AJ Green in slot 150 is miles ahead of his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick174
Rnd5
Jeremiah Cobb
A big swing on Jeremiah Cobb at the 174th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick179
Rnd5
Nicholas Rodriguez
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Nicholas Rodriguez in the 179th pick, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick190
Rnd6
Benjamin Brahmer
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Benjamin Brahmer well ahead of where he belonged. A pick in search of a role on this roster.
Pick193
Rnd6
Andrew Rappleyea
They reached a country mile for Andrew Rappleyea at the Round 6 slot, and the board is aghast. Need-wise, a curious use of the pick.
Pick216
Rnd6
Braylan Shelby
They talked themselves into Braylan Shelby at No. 216, and the board did not agree. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick234
Rnd7
Jake Guarnera
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jake Guarnera in pick 234. The roster fit checks out.
Pick239
Rnd7
Bryce Thornton
A slide stopped in the Round 7 slot, with Bryce Thornton worth more than the price. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
Pick247
Rnd7
Stephiylan Green
Value said wait; Stephiylan Green in pick No. 247 says they were not listening. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick254
Rnd7
D'Antre Robinson
They left a pile of value on the table to take D'Antre Robinson this early at the 254th pick. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
